Quilt Layouts

It can be difficult to work out how many shapes you are going to need for a quilt, even after you have decided on the design you are going to use. Bed sizes vary, as do mattress depths and the amount of bedding the quilt needs to cover. As there are many possible variations we have chosen to provide six standard quilt sizes to help you work out how many shapes you will need. The sizes of our standard quilt layouts are:

Name Size (in) Size (cm)
Placemat 18 x 13 46 x 33
Baby 34 x 44 86 x 112
Single 39 x 74 99 x 188
Double 54 x 75 137 x 190.5
Queen 60 x 80 152.5 x 203
King 78 x 80 198 x 203

Each layout that we have developed pays attention to the symmetry of the design. In some cases we have produced layouts for different shape sizes, which can produce very different visual effects due to the relative size of the shape to the whole quilt. The layouts shown are sized to cover the top of the mattress only.

One approach to working out the number of shapes you will need would be to measure your bed and then make allowances for the drop of the quilt and pillow tucks. Compare the dimensions you have worked out to the standard sizes above and use the closest standard size that will be big enough for your quilt. If you choose a smaller size you may be able to use some of the centre papers to increase the size of the quilt or you could choose the larger size knowing that you will have some papers left over for another project.

To see the layouts that are available for a design, click one of the designs below. You will be taken to a page that shows the layouts available for each quilt size. You can then select a layout to find out the number of shapes required for the quilt.
